My efforts to save money on phone service just backfired.

Time Warner was offering a pretty good deal on digital phone service, so I set up an appointment to have ours switched. When I called our current provider to cancel, though, I was offered some discounts that made it worthwhile to stay.

So I called Time Warner back to cancel. The phone service rep assured me the appointment was cancelled, as was the request to have our phone number “ported” over to Time Warner.

Except he lied. The Time Warner service technician showed up this morning, when nobody was home, and our phone number was switched to Time Warner…which doesn’t have our service, so our phone no longer works. Our current provider says it will be a week before we get our number back.

I learned two important lessons from this:

  • See what your current provider will offer you BEFORE you make plans to switch, and
  • Don’t trust a Time Warner rep as far as you can throw him.
